Café Beermoth

Manchester, England, U.K.
A joyful selection of beers on draft and in bottle, in a Belgian-inspired setting

What it is: This is where the beer lovers of Manchester come for outstanding selection with a contemporary vibe—even if the city is better known for its astounding collection of traditional pubs, such as the Marble Arch, City Arms, and the Peveril of the Peak. By all means, make the rounds, but if you’re looking for interesting options on keg, immaculately conditioned cask ale, or a special bottle from the cellar, you’ll find it here.

Why it’s great: The focus is the tap wall directly behind the long, wooden bar. Its seven handpulls pouring fresh cask ale are flanked by 10 more draft lines pouring kegged craft. Standing at the bar, you can see into the cellar through the window behind it, leaving nothing to the imagination in terms of how this bar runs its back end. Settle into one of the booths alongside its glass frontage and start with a pint of something local on cask—say, the house pale ale from Runaway—before moving on to something from farther afield. Don’t skip the comprehensive bottle list, featuring specialties from the likes of Belgium’s 3 Fonteinen, Australia’s Wildflower, and more. Fresh coffee is served daily, and savory pies and sausage rolls from local family butcher Littlewoods are on hand, if you’re peckish.

Hours: 3 p.m.–10 p.m., Monday; 12 p.m.–11 p.m., Tuesday–Thursday; 12 p.m.–12 a.m., Friday & Saturday; 12 p.m.–10 p.m., Sunday
