Optic (Barley), a spring barley bred and grown in the UK for the production of pale ale malt. Derived from the cross Chad × (Corniche × Force), it has grown to be the most widely planted barley in England and Scotland. Optic produces high yields and has moderate resistance to mildew and rust. It matures late and is capable of producing full-flavored, biscuity tasting malts, especially when floor malted, although flavors are considered lighter than those of the variety Pearl, which is also popular. Optic-based malts are widely used in the UK and by American craft brewers, especially for the production of pale ales and India pale ales.
