New Glarus Brewing Company, an American craft brewery located in the small Swiss-flavored town of New Glarus, Wisconsin, is well known for its world-class interpretations of a wide variety of beer styles, especially its artisanal fruit beers.
New Glarus Brewing Company was founded by Dan and Deb Carey in 1993. Dan, the brewmaster, graduated from University of California–Davis with a degree in Food Science, passed the Institute of Brewing and Distilling Diploma and Master Brewer exams, worked at a small brewery in Germany, and was a production supervisor at Anheuser-Busch before starting New Glarus. Deb Carey uses her entrepreneurial experience to handle the business affairs of the brewery, including sales and marketing. She also obtained the start-up capital for the business.
New Glarus’ product line is anchored by six year-round beers, the most notable of which are Wisconsin Belgian red and raspberry tart. These are both Belgian-inspired fruit beers made by traditional brewing methods using fresh fruit—Door County cherries for the Belgian Red and Oregon berries for the Raspberry Tart. The other New Glarus year-round selections are a Belgian-inspired abbey ale, a bottle conditioned farmhouse ale, a nut brown ale, and a pale ale. Several seasonal and one-off beers round out the brewery’s offerings.
New Glarus’ reputation as one of the finest American craft breweries is bolstered by a litany of awards at national and international competitions. The brewery has grown rapidly over the years, despite a tight geographical distribution limited largely to the surrounding few hundred miles.
