What it is: In a city known for Smith College, writers, artists, and indie rock, the Dirty Truth fits right into its surroundings—you could call it “hipster,” if you didn’t know any better. Here since 2006, this bar makes a point of showcasing local art, seasonal farm-to-table fare, and (of course) some of the finest beers in the world. Dive into a tap list more than 25 strong or bring a friend to help you enjoy the treasure-trove bottle list.
Why it’s great: Artsy and casually chic yet unpretentious, the Dirty Truth boasts a killer selection of domestic craft and imports alongside amari, sake, mead, cider, and cocktails—this is one of those “bartender’s bars.” The vibe is less conducive to throwing back drinks than it is to savoring the complexities of gueuze from Tilquin or Cantillon, the local hibiscus grisette, or an American oak-aged saison. Or, if you’re looking for a simpler form of refreshment, there’s a fantastic selection of lagers and hazy IPAs from across the region. However, should you be one to relish access to a Tommie Sjef Cuvée from the Netherlands, or a barrel-aged farmhouse ale with heirloom apples and smoked peaches from Amory’s Tomb of Massachusetts, or a spontaneously fermented wheat ale from Black Project of Colorado, you’re in the right place.
