Ahnapee Brewery Raspberry Spritzbier

What the brewers say

Our take on a craft hard seltzer, without being one. It’s razor dry, made with 350 pounds of real raspberry, barley, and hops.

What our panel thought

Sexy violet color. Aroma: black raspberry and plum-skin dark fruit. Slight smoky, charred note; touch of white bread, Cheerio. Moderate acidity—a bit harsh—and tannic skin or seed. Fruit wine without the alcohol. All about the fruit, but muddled.

What our editors thought

Rich, lightly sharp raspberry nose with touches of buttery roundness and ashy dive-bar-morning-after. The sip is slightly uncomfortable—not as weightless as typical seltzer, but dry, with a punch of fruit bitterness.

New Belgium Fruit Smash Berry Blast

“The aroma, reminiscent of a bag of Gushers, saves this one. The sip is a letdown. Cherry notes hide under a higher level of carbonation. Feels a bit rough. Abrupt carbonated-water finish forgot to include the fruit.”

Untitled Art Spritzer Weisse

“Earthy, vegetal aromas mingle with light tropical fruit and peach—curiously inviting. Flavor is lightly malty and much more bitter, tannic, and grainy than expected. Only lightly sour and acidic. Husky astringency dries out the finish and accentuates vegetal character. Caught in the no-man’s-land between crisp light lager and kettle sour.”

Denver Beer Princess Yum Yum Raspberry Kolsch

Aroma: “Raspberry character is strong and jammy. Slightly tart with hints of floral hops and only a touch of grain.” Flavor: “More raspberry. Slight moderate sweetness into slight acidity and very low bitterness. Well-balanced with a nice interplay of malt, fruit, and clean hops. Finish is pleasantly dry and crisp with a smack of tart. The quality of the raspberry flavor is fantastic—natural, deep, and nuanced.” Overall: “The raspberry is pleasant and noticeable but not over the top or cloyingly sweet. A bit thin, but a nice, easy-drinking summer beer for someone who doesn’t want something heavy-handed. It avoided the cliché of sweet fruit beer and almost shifts a bit too far to the opposite end of the spectrum, where you find yourself wanting a touch more sweetness.”
