Allagash Brewing Company Allagash White

What the brewers say

“Features a refreshing balance of citrus and spice. Coriander and Curaçao orange peel round out the flavor of this hazy Belgian-style wheat beer.”

What our panel thought

“Slightly hazy yellow with a nice white head. A somewhat sharp farmhouse nose. Pepper, clove, and coriander intertwine in the flavor and leave a spicy impression on the tongue. A slight bitterness also makes an appearance and works well with the spice component. Light coriander, lemon, and orange peel present themselves in the off-dry finish. A very fun and different take on the classical style.”

What our editors thought

“Pillowy white pepper over the faintest fruit background gives the nose a bit of snap. In the sip, the pepper note pushes forward with rigor, softened by off-dry fruit, with a white floral freshness that keeps everything shiny and bright. Remarkably balanced despite the strong competing flavors and aromas.”

Upland Brewing Wheat Ale

A wonderfully complex aroma of spicy/peppery, citrus, and yeasty notes that gives way to an equally complex flavor profile. Flavors of pear, clove, and pepper intermingle with the wheat-malt backbone and are complemented by a clean, but distinct, hops bitterness. It finishes smooth yet clean, and the moderately high level of carbonation cleans the palate and gets you ready to jump right back in. Hard to believe so much can be packed into such a lightly colored beer.”

New Belgium Fat Tire Belgian White

“A pleasant, clean, and lemony aroma gives way to an enjoyably complex flavor combination of sweet wheat malt, floral, citrus, and soapy hops, and lightly spicy coriander and fermentation-derived notes. Wonderfully clean and complex.”

Allagash Brewing Company White

**Aroma:** “Very light wheat with notes of coriander and a little bit of hop spice blended with slight sweetness and subtle hop notes. Mainly coriander and pepper notes.” **Flavor:** “Moderate sweetness with a strong bittering finish. Significantly more hop bitterness than would be expected for the style. Complex for a wit, with slight sweetness and herbal earthy notes. Sweet citrus in the finish. Big body despite carbonation and crispness. Almost a viscous mouthfeel.” **Overall:** “Wheat and spice character are well done, but the hop utilization or timing adds a bitterness that’s atypical for the style. A refreshing and different take on a wit. More spiced than usual but still finishes with sweet citrus. Good, crisp, refreshing beer.”
