Bootstrap Brewing 1956

What the brewers say

This crisp, dry golden ale is our lightest, most drinkable beer, balancing a light pilsener malt body with mild, pleasant German hop aroma.

What our panel thought

Floral, herbal hop aroma with low, cracker-like malt; slight orange notes. In the flavor, Wonderbread-crust biscuit malt nicely balanced by light touch of hop-bitterness. Light notes peach, orange, pear. Dry, clean finish. Very good drinkability.

What our editors thought

Light sulphur, dry cracker, and hay-malt nose—taut, with just a distant touch of sweetness. The sip is cool, calm, and collected. with endearing pilsner character and lively mouthfeel.

Lawson's Finest Liquids Above the Clouds

Aroma: “Assertive orange, grapefruit, and lemon hops. Slightly piney and earthy. Hints of lemongrass, green pepper, and green onion with a background of herbal tea and mint. There’s a touch of bready malt behind the hops.” Flavor: “There’s a lot of hops complexity. Bold citrus with a lemongrass focus. Malt flavors get lost in the shuffle. Light, clean body. Bitter and dry finish with a lingering hops-derived bitterness.” Overall: “More akin to a light-bodied session IPA/dry-hopped pale ale than a golden ale. Still, pleasantly assertive hops aromatics with a bold, hops-forward flavor in a super-light, clean ale. A unique dichotomy of styles.”

Squatters Chasing Tail Orange Golden Ale

Aroma: “Sharp earthy hops notes reminiscent of mushroom, tomato skin, and fresh green peas. This is joined by a huge dose of woody and pine hops, almost like an English country pine forest. Malt is easy overall, like a light biscuit.” Flavor: “Earthy hops notes carry the front, with some light chicken stock and woodsy notes. A touch of carbonation to heighten the beer’s flavors. Malt character is very subtle with just a touch of cracker and biscuit. Dry but crisp finish with a slight lingering mouth-coating bitterness.” Overall: “American-inspired in the hopping, British-inspired in the carbonation and smooth malt. This beer would serve as a fitting complement to a fish fry.”

New Belgium Brewing Dayblazer

Aroma: “Like a fruit orchard in spring. There’s moderate bready malt with very light bread crust. Slight grassy, citrus, and herbal hops. Very clean.” Flavor: “Simple but balanced. It starts off with moderately low sweetness and blossoms into a low hops bitterness but with a dry finish that’s crisp and refreshing. There’s a lot to like from citrus and melon hops, toasted malt, apple and pear esters, somewhat mineraly bitterness, and a mildly cloying sweet finish. Moderate carbonation gives it a bit of bite.” Overall: “This is your classic summer refresher. Simple but very drinkable. Balance of light bready malt and Old School grassy and herbal hops. We’ll say it again: well-balanced and well-crafted.”
