What the brewers say

“Barleywine aged in Laws Whiskey bourbon barrels.”

What our panel thought

“The nose invites you into a world of toasted oak, rich malt, and pleasant alcohols. Pleasant fruity esters and a subtle but noticeable vanilla-like oak character complement the malty sweetness of caramel, toffee, and butterscotch. Heat lingers in the finish a bit too much.”

What our editors thought

“A vinous nose offers light red-grape notes, a touch of balsamic, and some charred bourbon notes in the back. A sprawling undefined light caramel note in the sip.”

Our Mutual Friend Brewing Fixed Blade

“Moderate caramel, toast, and pipe tobacco. Light buttery vanilla oak. Soft notes of dried apricot and fig. Rich and sweet malt with flavors of caramel, toast, and pipe tobacco. Significant alcohol, hot on the swallow. Finishes sweet and a touch cloying. Alcohol lingers a while.”

Green Bench Brewing Co The Obscure

“Rich, decadent caramel, toffee, bittersweet chocolate, and a hint of vanilla punctuate the nose. The sip integrates brown-sugar and tobacco-like elements and a hint of oxidation that work well within the lightly oaky sip. Boozy heft and full body, but remains drinkable.”

Birds Fly South City Bus

Big grape aroma that's a bit more Concord grape, like than wine-like, but has some pleasant raspberry and dark cherry character especially in the flavor. The fruit largely overshadows the beer itself. Fairly low initial sweetness into strong but not overpowering sour that slowly fades into the finish.
