Ballast Point Longfin Lager

What the brewers say

“A classic German-style beer, brewed in San Diego. A solidly balanced helles that finishes clean with a hint of hops, our Longfin Lager would easily fit in at any German beer garden. But we think it’s perfect for enjoying on the beach, the boat, or anywhere else you can put an ice chest full of beer.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “A nice spring day on Marienplatz in Munich. Starts with a whiff of sulfur aroma and moves into light bready Pilsner malt and restrained spicy German hops (herbaceous, floral), and light white grape–juice notes.”

Flavor: “Grainy but still crisp and fairly dry. Emphasis on hops is slightly pronounced. Slightly bitter. Nice bread and light Pilsner malt flavor. Medium-light mouthfeel.”

Overall: “The nose is perfect. Nice malty flavor. A little dry and bitter for the style but very drinkable. Quite enjoyable and broadly in the helles style.”

Firestone Walker Firestone Lager (2018)

Aroma: “Clean, mild malt with an undercurrent of earthy hops. There’s a slightly sweet grainy aroma, some floral notes, and a subtle whiff of sulfur.” Flavor: “A little sweet in the start with a fair amount of bitterness on the finish. In the middle, it’s light clean malt, bread notes, and subtle sweetness. The hops bitterness is restrained.” Overall: “More Midwest than mid-Continent. Easy drinking, soft and unassuming. A little on the sweet side at first, but balanced with a fairly bitter finish.”

Ballast Point Lager

Greets you with a welcoming whiff of herbal coolness, a little Vicks, a little peppermint, maybe some eucalyptus. That carries through to the flavor with an added bit of chalkiness. Finishes clean, semidry, and maybe with a touch of alcohol heat. It's intriguing and likely a beer that people will either love or hate.

Ballast Point Brewing Company Wahoo

**Aroma:** “Very interesting, unexpected spice aroma. Sweet background wheat with lemon, almost like lemon candy. Very faint and earthy hop notes. Nice floral coriander.” **Flavor:** “Peppery phenolic notes. Some yeast character and coriander with a carbonic bite and some bitterness. Strong wheat graininess, but finishes crisp and clean. Balance is exceptional: fruity tartness is the prominent feature. Good blend of spice and earthy notes with creaminess from wheat malt.” **Overall:** “An interesting take on the style. Crisp and refreshing. Excellent beer that accents both the wheat and lemon character well. Refreshing wit with nice balance of sweet and spice. This would pair really well with certain types of food, especially Cantonese.”
