Seventh Son Brewing Sextus

What the brewers say

A blend of Ardbeg Scotch barrel–aged Oubliette, birch stave–aged Baltic Porter, Big Black Cow, Chester Cop-perpot, and fresh Oubliette and Earthling.

What our panel thought

Blueberry vanilla yogurt aromatics. Strong grape flavor. The Scotch reveals itself at the end and lingers through to the next sip. Very experimental and bold, and some will find that it delivers.

What our editors thought

A confounding beer that tastes nothing like anything else we’ve reviewed. The nose evokes mint chocolate chip ice cream. The flavor is light on spirits barrels, but the bright and soft herbal-meets-dark-chocolate bit-terness is intriguing and singular.

Liquid Mechanics Brewing Company One Toke Over the Line

“Herbaceous nose, lightly smoky, with charred bread, hint of chocolate, vanilla maltiness. Flavor has a nice caramel-toffee backbone, supporting moderate roast, leaning toward chocolate and slightly acrid coffee. Low smoky notes. Velvety smooth mouthfeel.”

Jack's Abby Barrel-Aged Framinghammer

Aroma: “Hints of booze, chocolate, and toasted coconut. Barrel components stand out—some wood but mostly whiskey.” Flavor: “Prominent smooth, creamy milk chocolate and coffee. Low supporting hops. Spicy woody alcohol flavor. Complex malt richness with toffee and coconut is accentuated by the barrel-aged qualities that add a tannic wood dryness, some toasted coconut, and a pleasant underlying boozy warmth. Finish is rich, but not overly cloying.” Overall: “Great underlying Baltic porter with interesting barrel-aged character. It certainly comes across pretty strong and a bit boozy, but you’re paying for a barrel-aged beer so it should slap you around a bit.”

Avery Brewing Company Vanilla Bean Stout

**Aroma:** “Aroma is overall muted, but moderate caramel, mild coffee, light chocolate, moderate toast, moderate plum and cherry, light vanilla. Reminds me of a Belgium Strong or perhaps an Eisbock. As it warms, more spiciness comes out.” **Flavor:** “Moderate sweetness, roast, plum, cherry, coconut, earthy. Touch of caramel and vanilla, big dark chocolate and mouthfeel. Big sweet fruity notes up front, almost sangria-like. Light chocolate and coffee notes in the background mixed with a moderate alcohol warming. A nicely balanced beer that reveals more as you sip.” **Overall:** “Dark chocolate, vanilla, and hints of roast coffee dominate the front of this beer, and coffee, dark cherry, and dark chocolate linger at the end. Pleasant and easy drinking. Take a sip, and you’re happy to take the next sip.”
