Suncrush Beer Tangerine Suncrush

What the brewers say

“A cold-conditioned sparkling ale, Suncrush is made with crushed fruit, matcha green tea (a natural source of caffeine and antioxidants), and natural flavors. Suncrush is also gluten- reduced and all-natural.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Slightly over-ripe tangerine but where’s the tea?”

Flavor: “Tangerine dominates up front, but it’s not overpowering, and well-

balanced with the malt and bitterness. The tea character emerges at the end and lingers, giving a pleasant aftertaste of afternoon tea with biscuits and jam. Relatively thin in body, so it drinks a bit like a lightly sweetened ice tea. Finishes dry mostly from the citric acid.”

Overall: “It’s all about the tangerine. It is a curious and creative beer that seemingly shouldn’t work, but is quite refreshing and fun. Don’t go looking for any particular beer character—it’s definitely fruit-forward and meant for crushing on warm summer days, not savoring.”

Black Project STARGATE²

Peaches and licorice up front. A distracting bubblegum-like flavor leads to a feeling of biting into a ripe peach skin. Intense tartness overpowers the positive peach flavors, and a bit of Brett bite adds to the sharp corners. If you like very sour beers with intense peach flavor, you will love this beer.

Brewery Vivant Space Queen Immortal

Huge resinous, almost grassy, hops aroma. The hops flavor is shackled to a rambunctious sourness, and neither one is at ease with the forced partnership.

Upslope Brewing Company Oatmeal Stout

**Aroma:** “Rich complex roast. Very low ester profile. Notes of coffee, some chocolate, dry cocoa sweetness. Toasty malt with a hint of caramel. As it warms, more chocolate and and some dark roasted roast.” **Flavor:** “Medium sweet with slightly tart finish. Sharp chocolate up front with a rich roastiness that takes over quickly after. Characteristic silkiness of oatmeal stout. Medium smoke note that extends into the aftertaste. A sharp bitterness from the roast character reminds me of an iced coffee. Some nutty notes, some dry chocolate sweetness and bitterness. Thin bodied. Earthy hops come through near the end as well as dark roasted malt. Finish is quite dry.” **Overall:** “Rich and complex, yet easy drinking. Very dry. Malt is simple but works well, and the slight earthy hops are good. A high roast creates an astringency and almost a bitterness. Medium smoke note that also contributes to the astringency. This beer had some nice roast qualities, but the roast itself seemed to dominate the flavor. Somewhat thin for an oatmeal stout.”
