Finkel & Garf Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout (2019)

What our panel thought

The aroma begins with cocoa and baking spices, then fades to bourbon and higher alcohols with a touch of umami. Dark fruit, bourbon, dry espresso. Raisins, caramel, and layered chocolate flavors are balanced by hops bitterness and alcohol warmth.

What our editors thought

Mid-sweet chocolate on the nose plays with a hint of cinnamon and tanned leather backed by significant bourbon oak notes. The flavor has a bit of acidic roast malt bite tempered a bit by the residual sweetness, but it’s a bit sharp on the swallow.

Toppling Goliath Brewing Norseman's Wrath

Dank, assertive hops with lurking citrus and dark fruit. Rich, smooth, sweet malt blast—dark dried cherries, molasses, chocolate. Hop-driven flavor knocks off your Nikes.

Station 26 Brewing Hell Bear

Straightforward whiskey-barrel aroma; layers of spice and vanilla. Full body and integrated flavor: strong, almost medicinal licorice; chocolate and vanilla; coffee; hints of dried fruit; spicy barrel. Smooth and inviting. Lingering very dark chocolate. Grab a cigar and your smoking jacket.

Neshaminy Creek Brewing Company Bourbon Barrel-Aged Leon Russian Imperial Stout

**Aroma:** “Moderate roast up front with vanilla, chocolate, moderate wet earth, a bit of acidity, light apple/pear fruit notes, moderate caramel notes, big sweetness, moderate umami. Lots of cherry. None of this should distract you from the brandy-like alcoholic warmth. There is plenty of vanilla and leathery oak to justify the barrel-aged label.” **Flavor:** “Big sweetness is immediately apparent with moderate coconut, light vanilla, smooth roast, a touch of earthy oak, strong caramel, light plum, touch of cherry, touch of umami. Expected chocolate notes. Medium alcohol note with appropriate carbonation. Roasty at the end of the sip. Very well blended with a touch of heat on the finish. Great wood character.” **Overall:** “This beer really showcases the roast, chocolate, and dark stone fruit throughout. Very pleasant. Big but not overwhelming.”
