Brasserie Cantillon Kriek Bio 2020

What the brewers say

Blend of lambics and sour cherries.

What our panel thought

Fantastic deep, solid, cherry aroma. Yeasty undertone with vanilla oak. Solid sour-cherry flavor. Light earthy funk that carries a definite grassy, minty, herbal hop bitterness that seems out of place. A likeable kriek; flavor just seems odd.

What our editors thought

Pie cherry and pie spice on the nose with a curious herbal sleekness that keeps it from feeling too warm or nostalgic. Flavor brings those cherries with a touch of minty herbalness, clarifying but mildly confusing. An underlying nuttiness holds it together, but the clash between herbal hops, cool but sweet fruit, and warm nut notes doesn’t fully resolve. Give it a few years to work through its youth.

Brasserie Cantillon Kriek

**Aroma:** “Tart sour cherry aroma with a slight cherry sweetness and some horse blanket. A bit goaty with earthy spicy notes and a lemon lactic sweetness. The cherries and sweetness grew as it sat.” **Flavor:** “Dry and tart with the sweetness coming through with the acidic tartness in the back. Cherries are the dominant flavor with slight hints of tart grapefruit. Some earthy, woody, goaty notes give some nice complexity to this beer. The finish has a lot going on with some tart cherry sweetness and some lactic acidity. Linger is moderately lasting and dry with slight peppery notes.” **Overall:** “Tartness overpowers with slight hints of phenolic notes, cherry and grapefruit. A more adventuresome sour—very wild tasting. Tart and dry. This beer requires adjustment—the more I drank it the more I enjoyed it. The complexities of the beer were intriguing, and the tart finish made me want to drink another sip.”

**Aroma:** “Nice tart and sweet cherry character. Some earthy spicy notes that add complexity. Moderate cherry notes. Slight tart note as it warms up. Strong sour cherry aroma.” **Flavor:** “The balance of the sweetness to the tartness in this beer is really nice. It is not too bold but the nice sharp lactic notes bring boldness to this beer. The carbonation is really nice and helps lift the beer as well. The sweet cherries help to finish the beer and keep it juicy and sweet. Very nice sour cherry character. Not too much barnyard, but still sour complexity.” **Overall:** “Very enjoyable and a nice balance of the tartness to the sweetness. The showcase of both the cherry and the lactic tartness was very nice. As it warms and the carbonation starts to dissipate, more of the cherry note comes out. Light goat and horse blanket.”

Yeast of Eden Vinisimilar: Pinot Noir

On the nose, notes of blackberry, pear, red grape combined with oak and funk. Initial palate is soft and fruity; raspberry, dark cherry give way to oak and grape-skin tannins and grape esters.
