Burial Beer Co The Fortress of Immaculate Thought

What the brewers say

Barrel-aged golden sour with blueberries. Find Beaujolais nouveau, dried raspberries, mixed-berry smoothie, a waft of Blueberry Kush.

What our panel thought

An inviting nose of sweet raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, currant aromas with an underlying funk and barrel character. Gentle blueberry flavor complements the lemon, leather, and horse-blanket funk, and the barrel backs it up. Tartness and acidity create a wine-like sharpness that complements the fruity funk.

What our editors thought

Juicy, rich blueberry, spicy currant, plus a bit of nutty Noyaux in the background. The foreground of the sip balances a lush, luxurious round fruit character with a quick acid hit, but the background fills out the story with softer vanilla and caramel notes and a light lingering earthy funk, for a compelling balance.

Burial Beer Co The Separation of Light and Darkness (2020 Harvest)

Intense overripe peach aroma, so vibrant you can smell the fuzz. That fresh-peach note carries into the flavor, where it shines but comes across a bit more funky with leather, oak, horse-blanket undertones. The moderate acidity helps balance the sweet funk and ties things together well.

Halfway Crooks Beer Zero Cool

“Bright lemon, candied lemon, rosemary notes in the aroma. Smooth, crisp flavor, with lemon zest and lemon flesh dominating a low bread backbone. Rosemary notes show up later and linger into a lemony herbal finish.”

Burial Beer Co Garden of Earthly Delights

“Complex aroma—_strong_ vanilla, berry, some herbal notes. Vanilla in the flavor overpowers the more subtle notes. Chamomile, with semisweet background berry notes. Medium-sweet body and subdued sourness.”
