What the brewers say

“A blend of grisette aged in grenache puncheons, wild ale aged in our egg foeder, and Central Standard’s Standard Issue culture.”

What our panel thought

“Showcases a slight cheesiness laced around a tart, apricot-lemon aroma. Very refreshing with a light body and high carbonation, and the tartness adds a lemony quality to the grainy malt backbone. A pleasant, lasting aftertaste keeps you going back for more. Retains an impressive levity even with the heavier hints of barnyard funk.”

What our editors thought

“Fresh aroma with bunches of lemongrass, pale grain, sweet floral blossoms, and a woody Brett undertone. Light and citrusy in the sip, with lemon, lime, tangerine, and even mango. Lively on the tongue, with a dancing carb that reinforces the weightless feel. Finishes clean with just a touch of Brett bitterness. Simple and small yet expansive in flavor.”

AC Golden Brewing Company Peche

**Aroma:** “Fresh peaches up front, with a hint of apricot and even nectarine. Slight sulfur, light pineapple and banana. Brett funk and fruitiness come through in the nose. Hints of smoky, burnt rubber—a bit phenolic. Tartness comes through mostly as lactic acid, reminiscent of a Berliner or Gose.” **Flavor:** “Nice peach fruitiness with a touch of apricot. A very subtle hint of butter along with the peach. Tart citric sourness quickly melds with fairly strong peaches and starts to overtake the fruit. The Brett character adds complexity without too much funk. Slight undertone of rubber/sulfur lingers in the aftertaste. Touch of husky graininess at the tail end.” **Overall:** “Good sour, but a little thin, and the fruit characteristics are pretty light. Nice showcase of peach character with a decent tartness and acidity that could be dialed back just a bit more to better highlight the fruit.”

The Commons Brewery Maybelle

**Aroma:** “Light lemon note. Slightly sweet maltiness. Hint of _Brett_ funk. Some dark stone fruits and earthy notes. Pear and red apple esters with a hint of white pepper and a touch of malt sweetness.” **Flavor:** “Sweet and sour notes up front with peach sweetness and a slight oak sour note. Light creamy consistency at the end with a nice peppery spiciness. Fruity sweet with a tart finish—almost with a touch of wood/oak. Medium body with a dry sour finish. Apple, pear, peach, apricot fruit character dominate up front that coupled with the malt sweetness gives a very sweet fruity character. Barnyard _Brett_ in the background. Moderate sweet into strong sour that fades back into a low-to-moderately sweet finish.” **Overall:** “Very drinkable. Nice fruity and funky aroma and flavor but a bit high on the acidity. I really enjoy the big stone-fruit flavors and the more subtle funk. Overall this beer is fairly sweet for a saison even though it’s enjoyable and very drinkable.”

Wicked Weed Brewing Genesis

**Aroma:** “Medium sour note with a fruit melody with slight peach, green apple, pineapple, lemon, clove, tropical fruit, and a touch of sour. Floral Brett aroma.” **Flavor:** “Light clean lactic sourness with flavors of apricot/peach skin. Cider-like green and red apple flavors. Lime and grapefruit notes with a low green apple note. Grainy malt sweetness. Cinnamon and bread crust tart sourness is very smooth, lactic. High fruitiness up front with a rush of moderate sour notes com- ing in. High carbonation complements the sour notes. Slight wood or oak notes. Linger is slight and sour.” **Overall:** “Slightly sweet and lemony makes for a very tasty beer. Fruit character is very subdued. It is very easy to drink and only moderately sour. Nice clean lactic flavor dominates. There’s a lot going on, and I’m trying to pick out what the fruits are, but then the rush of sourness comes on.”
