What the brewers say

“A traditional, refreshing German cloudy wheat beer with a delicate balance of banana and clove aroma and flavor.”

What our panel thought

“Initial aroma of citrus lemon and orange. Flavor follows aroma with light tartness and bready notes. The body is light and highly carbonated, verging on gassy.”

What our editors thought

“A faint whiff of sharpie on the nose that fades into a vague cucumber-lime. The sip is effervescent, with tight carbonation on the tongue and orange and tangerine notes coming to the fore. It finishes faster than most, with a lingering orange-zest note and a dryness that’s inviting.”

Ayinger Brauweisse

“Pours hazy yellow with a big white head of dense foam. The aroma has strong fruit esters and spice with a background of wheat malt and a bit of dank hops aroma. Strongly fruity with a surprising citrus tartness.”

Väsen Brewing Company Hefeweizen

“Bready aroma with very low esters or phenolics. Moderate tart lemon flavor settles into a medium grainy bread note. As with the aroma, the fruity esters are almost nonexistent. Low black pepper and tea-like notes linger into a quite dry finish with a hint of bread. Leans a little too bitter.”

C. B. & Potts Big Horn Hefeweizen

**Aroma:** “A big hit of wonderful esters—especially banana—and bubblegum. Some spicy phenols emerge as the beer warms, mostly clove, with a touch of citrus and pepper. Lemon tart and pastry follow, bringing forth Froot Loop aroma, and bready and herbal notes linger behind the yeast.” **Flavor:** “Such subdued flavor, which is surprising, given the hint of sour acetic in the aroma. Delicate clove and pepper phenols. Some great citrus notes of orange and lemon develop, and even more lemon in the aftertaste. The banana esters are on the lighter side, and balance with the sweet wheat and bread crust malts. Creamy and medium-light body, but a dry finish.” **Overall:** “The palate is soft, with a sweet body, and complex fruity and spiciness that carry the beer into a smooth, dry finish. While it’s not classic for a hefe, and it’s on the lighter side in body and ester profile for the style, it’s still a nice balance.”
