Dry Dock Brewing Co - North Dock Bligh's Barleywine

What the brewers say

“Malty English barleywine aged in bourbon barrels.”

What our panel thought

“On the nose, subtle chocolate, vanilla, and leather support caramel and toffee notes. An earthy, citrus-like bitterness in the finish tempers the sweet, somewhat decadent, malt flavors.”

What our editors thought

“Toasty burnt brown sugar, deep caramel, light oaky tannins, subtle citrus tones in the aroma. Smooth in the sip as those citrus notes high point the caramel. Incredibly smooth yet lively.”

Green Bench Brewing Co The Obscure

“Rich, decadent caramel, toffee, bittersweet chocolate, and a hint of vanilla punctuate the nose. The sip integrates brown-sugar and tobacco-like elements and a hint of oxidation that work well within the lightly oaky sip. Boozy heft and full body, but remains drinkable.”

Moksa Brewing Co Birthday Barleywine

“Deep dark chocolate, vanilla, bourbon, toffee aromatic notes. Oak bourbon-barrel age qualities with notes of apricot, dark chocolate, tart cherries. Substantial body. Silky semisweet finish.”

Dry Dock Brewing 2014 Bligh's Barleywine

Aroma: “Malted milk balls! Big toffee and almost burnt-caramel notes. Slight vanilla character on the nose. Medium wood nose that is nutty with a heavy marshmallow sweetness accented by raisins, dates, and chocolate.” Flavor: “Really nice caramel sweetness with some nutty character. The big booziness adds warmth and a nice body that brings vanilla, chocolate, and stone fruit to the forefront.” Overall: “The barrel character is just superb and enhances beer while rounding and integrating all of the various flavor components. It’s a nicely balanced barley wine with thorough complexity. Time may mellow the alcohol harshness, but the sweetness will probably stick around, making it perfect for sharing.”
