Prost Dunkel

What the brewers say

“Dunkels have a distinctive malty flavor that comes from a special brewing technique called decoction mashing. We are reviving the Altfränkisches Dunkel Bier from the Hümmer Brauerei in Breitengüßbach, the brewery whose brewhouse now resides in Denver, Colorado, at Prost Brewing.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Toasty and nutty with hints of raisin. Very pleasant and inviting.”

Flavor: “Medium toast, light caramel sweetness. Subtle minty hops flavor. Balance tips mostly to malt with toffee and raisin. The finish is caramel-

focused and dry, with a bit of toasted walnut astringency.”

Overall: “Pleasant chewiness and tons of malt aroma. Good malt complexity that has subtle hints of dried fruit without being overpowering. The overall dryness keeps the malt in check. Very solid. Hits the style on the nose.”

Kulshan Brewing Co Kulshan Dunkel

“Delicate bread crust and light caramel aromatics fade quickly. The flavor notes are equally fleeting with an initial hint of caramel and roast malt that quickly falls off into a light hint of floral hops. Surprisingly airy.”

Prost Brewing Company Pils

**Aroma:** “A light earthy, grassy, piney, and spicy hops profile, with a touch of honey and moderate skunkiness and sulfur. Some sweet cracker, grain, and a little floral add some complexity to the nose.” **Flavor:** “Bitter and skunky notes up front that continue to grow well after the taste is over. The hops bitterness holds some pine and earthiness, as well as some floral tones, that carry through. Biscuit sweetness emerges toward the back, but is hidden by the strong hops.” **Overall:** “Although the malt hits at first, the piney and earthy characters of the hops are what linger. Enjoyable for those who like more bitter beers, but might be seen as off-balance.”

Wibby Moondoor Dunkel

Aroma: “A lively combination of light roasts of coffee, toast, and chocolate. It’s joined by a subtle earthy and spicy hops aroma mixed with dried cherries and a hint of corn. All well-balanced and coming off as clean.” Flavor: “The malt has some nice toffee and dark cherry character, but it’s a bit overwhelmed by the roast astringency that overpowers things a bit. Some caramelized sweetness dances around to help mellow it overall. The finish is dry, with lingering coffee and grassy hop bitterness.” Overall: “Toastier than a biergarten in August, but some surprising hops aromatics that complement the roasted aromas and flavors nicely.”
