Ecliptic Brewing Seventh Orbit

What the brewers say

Raspberries, along with Enigma and Ariana hops, blend perfectly with a touch of chocolate in a smooth golden ale.

What our panel thought

Shining raspberries and chocolate bass note in the nose set an expectation for sweet, rich. and decadent. In the flavor, raspberry tartness, chocolate bitterness, and resinous pine clash rather than coalesce. Vegetal undertone, fruit astringency. Tart, bitter finish confuses things.

What our editors thought

Intensely sweet berries-and-chocolate nose. The malty core dominates the sip with a slight bitter-chocolate edge. The lack of acidity undermines the fruit. Compelling aroma builds expectations that go unmet.

Perrin Brewing Company Gold Ale

Aroma delivers light cracker-like malt with touches of corn and perfumed floral hops. In the flavor, mild tangerine and lemon join the hop notes; just a wisp of bitterness, with a green-bean vegetal note. Fairly clean finish, lingering on a citrus memory.

West Sixth Brewing Co Pennyrile Pale Ale

Fairly clear with a very robust head. Sweet biscuit-malt nose gives way to subtle but dank hops. Sweet caramel-malty flavor with firm bitterness and nice, light pine-resin hop flavor with sweet orange notes. Easy to drink.

Seventh Son Brewing Co Seventh Son

In the nose, pine and candied-orange hops play well with light, caramel-malt sweetness; notes of passion fruit, guava, dank cellar. Flavor is surprisingly light and soft—low bitterness, light malt, easy drinking. Soft, clean finish with notes of raspberry, orange, overripe tropical fruit, and dankness. Well attenuated, with the balance of a pale ale. This beer would get me in trouble.
