What the brewers say

“BA Scotch ale. Flavors of dark fruit, sweet caramel, oak.”

What our panel thought

“Big red-apple and toffee aroma with notes of oak. Pastry malt and caramel flavors. Medium spicy alcohol, dates, figs. Low banana and pear esters. Rich toffee and caramel malt.”

What our editors thought

“Stunning aroma with peach, apricot, and red-apple flesh and skin, lighter malt whiskey, a hint of toffee and darker caramel tones, and glazed donut. Bold rye and pumpernickel bread notes in the flavor, significant hop and roast-malt bitterness, and a boozy berry note. Beautifully balanced, fearless.”

Good Land Brewing Co. Cafe Mexicano XO

“Cinnamon dominates the nose, continues into the sip, and on through the finish. Coffee is noticeable but plays second chair with chocolate, caramel, vanilla notes. A green-pepper note on the finish. Boozy heat is restrained and enhances the cinnamon spiciness.”

Deschutes Brewery Cellar Door Society: Munich Wein

“Big malty aroma with notes of caramel pastry, light chocolate, red apple. Great balance with the alcohol and sweet, bready malt flavor (toffee and caramel malt), dates, and figs. Low spicy alcohol with a light chocolate in the finish.”

Deep Ellum Brewing Company Four Swords

**Aroma:** “Rich, robust malt sweetness with notes of toffee and caramel, followed by a moderately strong fruity ester profile (raisin, cherry, plum, and fig). Very low alcohol note. Some phenolics, mostly pepper.” **Flavor:** “Sweet malt flavors up front with hints of caramel, toffee, and Belgian candi sugar, well supported by a fruity ester note of raisin, date, plum, low banana, and slight licorice. That’s all balanced by a decent hops bitterness and a bit of heat and alcohol sweetness that seem to highlight pepper phenolics. Medium carbonation and a big body.” **Overall:** “A nice alcohol presence without overpowering, a very deeply layered, yet balanced malt backbone, and rich fruity notes make for a delicious and dangerously drinkable quad.”
