Oskar Blues JAHvanilla Ten FIDY 2019

What the brewers say

Aged with coffee and vanilla beans.

What our panel thought

Coffee- and chocolate-forward in aroma and flavor, with hints of vanilla, caramel, roast malt, and toasted marshmallow that complement the base beer and add an impression of alcoholic warmth. A bit on the thin side and a bit harshly boozy.

What our editors thought

Nutty, almond, and roast notes dominate the nose with a strong vanilla undercurrent. The sip is on the thin-ner side, but woody tannic sharpness helps cut through the rich vanilla and coconut sweetness. Bold, clean, and rich. Walks a properly tensioned slackline between decadent and disciplined.

Hi-Wire Brewing - South Slope Specialty Brewery 10W-40 Bourbon Barrel-Aged

“Aroma of coconut, licorice, coffee, light caramel. Dark chocolate, coffee notes lead the sip followed by a pleasant lingering bitterness. Subsequent sips give the impression of a Dark Chocolate Almond Joy. Firm bitterness balances the sweetness.”

Oskar Blues Barrel-Aged Ten FIDY 2018

A blend of roast and bourbon across the nose. Cherry pie covered in chocolate with a side of roasted malt. Balanced finish falling on the side of a touch too roasty.

Liquid Mechanics Brewing Company Street Punk Stout

“Espresso and dark chocolate in the aroma. Solid malt, lots of toast, deep, sweet chocolate, and hints of coffee balanced with some assertive hop bitterness. Roasty malt falls off the palate nicely but leaves a hint of peppery spice. Not subtle or delicate by any stretch, but stout is a style that can embrace some of these edgy qualities.”
