Perennial Artisan Ales La Boheme

What the brewers say

Belgian-style ale aged in wine barrels with Michigan tart cherries."

What our panel thought

"Acidic-forward, borderline mouth- puckering. Pleasant, malt-derived roast, smoke, and toast serve as an appropriate backbone to showcase the tart sourness and the tannic and leather notes. Subtle fruity hints of sour cherry and Granny Smith apple integrate well."

What our editors thought

"Burning rosemary branches and roasted cherries on saddle leather with a hint of dark caramel and toasted cedar, then a brief balsamic hit on the sip."

Brown Truck Brewery Wallonia Way Belgian Saison

“Nicely harmonized in the aroma—notes of light clove, chamomile tea, subtle lemon-lime-floral-herbal hop, soft grain, all melded together into an integrated ‘saison’ aroma, classy and familiar. Lightly sweet on the palate with a slightly resinous bitterness—tasting a little heavy-handed after such a restrained aroma. Wanting more sparkle and dryness in the finish.”

Perennial Artisan Ales La Bohéme

**Aroma:** “Clean acetic sourness with a hint of raspberry and vanilla-oak-tobac- co-acetic-low-floral loveliness. Medium sour notes with a touch of citrus fruit and dark cherry. As it warms, there is a slight malt sweetness similar to light molasses. Some goaty _Brett_ complexity.” **Flavor:** “Moderate acidity with a very well-balanced malt bill. Raspberry complements the acidity with a slight tannic bite. Tiny amount of cherry sweetness right before the carbonic/sour bite. As it warms, there is a slight herbal note. Nice soft lactic flavor with a tiny hint of sweetness that ties the entire beer together with a nice bow. Dry cherries with a wood-type character leave a dry, fruity, lasting linger.” **Overall:** “Really, really delicious—a very well-rounded beer. It has enough other things going on with the fruit and malt bill that the acidity isn’t overpowering. The fruit adds depth without overpower- ing the beer. A bold sour with a refreshingly slight puckering note and great balance of wood notes to support the sour. A sour for sipping and savoring.”

pFriem Family Brewers Belgian-Style Dark Ale

“Nutty breadcrust nose with a substrate of mild phenol. Light hints of American hop resin, with apricot and golden currant esters plus vanilla oak notes. Rich toffee, fig, and sweet-roll malt flavor. Low soft hints of clove and a touch of pepper phenol.”
