Firestone Walker Los Leñadores

What the brewers say

“Collaboration with Cigar City. Imperial brown ale aged in high-rye bourbon barrels.”

What our panel thought

“The initial approach is toasted bread with cinnamon. More cinnamon and barrel in the flavor, with toffee and caramel-like notes. Sweet initially, but the heat from the cinnamon and the booze help dry it out.”

What our editors thought

“Holiday spice-cake notes of ginger, nutmeg, and orange zest on the nose. The sip is curiously deep—layers of flavors that range through woody, slightly tannic, spicy, warming, cinnamon, and more. Fascinating and engaging. ”

Boulevard Brewing Co Sugarwood Baklava

“First impressions in the nose are caramel, apple, coconut with some toasted hazelnuts and plum as it warms. Flavor is dark fruit, toasted nuts, bread crust, and brown sugar. The star is the alcohol for its spicy contribution along with some nice dark cherry notes.”

Brävery Brewing Canis Major

Rich, boozy, bourbon nose with light vanilla. Medium-sweet flavor, probably boosted by alcohol; moderate caramel and toast with a touch of cocoa powder. Light roasty notes. Big, boozy, enjoyable, despite nondescript base beer.

Firestone Walker Sucaba 2019

“A bourbon alcohol note on the aroma complements the dried-fruit, caramel, vanilla, and leather. Brown sugar, caramel, vanilla, and crystal malt–like notes are complemented by pleasant oak-forward flavors and subtle layered dried-fruit esters.”
