New Anthem Beer Project Clapback Triple Bizarro

What the brewers say

“Big wheated variant of our all-Citra DIPA with an addition of Riwaka and Nectaron.”

What our panel thought

“Lemony yellow color with a light-to-medium head. A punchy, dank green aroma laced with sweet, fruity alcohol notes of candied apricots and amaretto. Flavor is a powerhouse of sweet rolls, candied orange, stone fruits, honey, herbal tea. Bitter in a great balancing way. An enormous beer that somehow pulls a huge array of flavors all together.”

What our editors thought

“Azalea flowers, guava, pineapple, kiwi, a touch of Southern Hemisphere–like thiols with a fresh herbal edge that’s engaging and deep. Drops down an octave in the sip, with stronger tropical bitterness and equally matched orange and lime peel that give dimension while destroying any perception of excessive sweetness. It echoes the best of the tiki world, employing sweetness, bitterness, acidity, and herbal freshness in creative and expressive ways that still achieve balance despite their huge scale. Muscular without sacrificing its fast-twitch response.”

Hop Butcher For the World Only Interested in New Zealand

“Citrus hop nose with kiwi and strawberry. Vivid hop flavors lean stone fruit with a citrus component. Malt structure provides the stage to let the hops sing. Layered finish with bright hop notes and enough bitterness to cut through and clear the palate.”

Alvarado Street Brewery Riwaka, Baby!

“Muted aroma with slight fruity hop notes and a low counterpoint of toasty malt. Flavor has a slight cinnamon note on top of the medium citrus and a malt presence that provides balance. Nice roundness to the mouthfeel. Medium bitterness.”

New Anthem Beer Project BA'AL

“Dank nose, with low hints of grapefruit pith and orange peel popping out of the glass. Big tropical punch, fruity, with some alcohol heat. Appearance is total orange-juice haze. Not over the top—balanced sweetness with the fruit character and a decent bitter base to hold everything together. Complex and rich throughout. Silky mouthfeel all the way through the finish with that ABV well hidden in the background.”
