Coastal Extreme Brewing Company Newport Storm InfRIngement

What the brewers say

“The beer was designed to have enough roasted bitterness and body to balance out the impacts of the sweetness from the barrel and the pickup of the remnants of rum. InfRIngement goes well beyond just throwing beer in a barrel. It is the destination after a 4-year exploration into the realm of beer aging in rum barrels.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “A lot of sweet rum and coconut notes. Sweet cane sugar. Some oak barrel notes, chocolate, and vanilla. Big fruity esters with plums with a touch of oxidization, okay for the style. Chocolate rum balls. Smells like holidays with the family.”

Flavor: “The taste is of roasty rum. Sweet and sugary with vanilla and a little coconut. The roast from the beer comes in with some chocolate, and some dark fruit cherries. Oak tannins are present to add complexity to the beer. Full bodied with lots of flavor. Aftertaste is semi-dry with light white chocolate, roast, and a creamy consistency. Finishes sweet but not cloying. Medium sweetness and medium body makes this beer pretty drinkable, maybe even a couple of pours worth. Finishes relatively dry with some nice barrel tannins.”

Overall: “There is a lot of sweetness in this beer but the finish is not too sweet, which is nice. Not hot at all and very smooth. The rum and chocolate malt pair nicely. The oak is strong but helps provide balance for the sweeter elements of this beer. Very enjoyable! The rum character is a bit strong handed, but not offensive.”
