East Brother Beer Oatmeal Stout

What the brewers say

"English-inspired with notes of rich milk chocolate, dark fruit—soft, comforting finish."

What our panel thought

"Subdued dark-chocolate nose, light fresh-roast malt and low floral hops beneath; toffee note as it warms. Nice, round flavor, bitter and bittersweet, edged by soft espresso with light sugar; floral rose-petal-like hop note. Medium body, lively."

What our editors thought

"Subdued floral, apple, and cherry notes in the nose. The sip is visually thin but round on the tongue, with more red fruit and an unabashed embrace of layered malt sweetness that's kept in check by just a touch of mild roast and a prickly carb. Comforting."

Maplewood Brewing Company Fat Pug

“Smooth, light chocolate aroma with no esters. Pleasant low oatmeal notes add complexity. Smooth body with well-balanced bitterness and medium sweetness that lingers. Carbonation is a touch high but clears the palate. Medium chocolate and low roast with smooth oatmeal notes.”

2nd Shift Brewing Chico's Revenge

Delicate but rich, roasty, complex nose; notes of anise, chocolate. Candy-like sweetness shifts gradually toward malt-driven chocolate and vanilla. Runs gamut of bitter roast, rich sweet chocolate, hints of dried fruit. Pleasant, tongue-coating body. Round, velvety finish. Sweet, but with enough character to back it up.

Rogue Ales & Spirits Shakespeare Oatmeal Stout

**Aroma:** “Light aroma with a touch of oats and light roast. A light hops flavor—citrus and pine American hops. Oatmeal and slight toast come through in the finish. Very low ester profile, but maybe a touch of vanilla. There is a nice roast character in this beer. Some complex chocolates along with some earthy nuttiness, toast, and roast. Coffee notes are also present.” **Flavor:** “Roasty malt, toast, and creamy oatmeal. Slight sweetness up front transitions into assertive bitterness that lingers. Lots of American hops flavor, and hops bitterness carries through to help cut the sweetness and add complexity. Rich blend of milk and dark chocolate with some bready toasted notes. Ester profile is quite subdued with some dark cherry peeking through. There is a sweetness that carries through with chocolate and coffee. Very bitter for this style with hops bitterness of pine.” **Overall:** “A slightly higher body and sweetness would help balance out this beer. The American hops and bitterness are pretty intense and not very appropriate for this style. The malt complexity is pretty good, and the body is nice. Oatmeal is used well, but overwhelmed by the hops. This beer provides nice complexity with some bold flavors. It was sweet but not too sweet.”
