Old Thunder Brewing Mild Stillage

What the brewers say

“A classic mild ale brewed with Maris Otter and Chevallier heritage malts and hopped with East Kent Goldings.”

What our panel thought

“Great malt-forward aroma, with notes of caramel and toffee and an inviting toasted nuttiness, supported by warm toasted bread and faint molasses notes. Slight red apple rounds out the aromatics. Pomme fruit character dominates the palate, balanced by notes of roast and toast. Light hop bitterness keeps the malt sweetness in balance. A great malt finish with a balance of toast, coffee, caramel, toffee. Reminiscent of classic mild ales.”

What our editors thought

“Toasty malt nose with very faint herbal hop notes. Soft, toasted malt with bready edges in the sip, alongside a prominent orange note that amplifies the allure. Rides the flavor line to the edge of subtlety and balance, without stepping over.”

Old Thunder Brewing Burned & Broken

“Deep rich caramel, dark fruit, toast aroma. Mild chocolate and dried apricot. Rich caramel and toasty flavor. Chocolate and fig finish with a touch of hop bitterness.”

Good Word Brewing & Public House Analog Life

“Aroma punches above its weight with malted milk balls, grainy biscuit, slight roast, and light floral hops. Surprisingly rich malt flavors, with chocolate, sweet malt, and firm hop bitterness. Light grain astringency. Soft, quick finish. Flavorful.”

Chapman Dispense as Written

Aroma: “Malt-forward. Biscuit, bread, toast. Subtle noble hops. Lightly floral, perfume. Slight lemon esters with a light, woodsy hops aroma, some berry notes, and a hint of caramelized apples.” Flavor: “Bright nutty character, almost peanut-like, up front. Floral hops notes emerge more as it warms. Low carbonation and body, but both are appropriate to style. The finish is biscuit malt mixed with apple and pear esters balanced with light earthy hops, low bitterness, and smooth finish.” Overall: “A clean, well-balanced easy-drinking mild. It’s like a session nut brown ale, which in itself is usually sessionable, so if you’re in the mood for a super crushable autumn beer, this will do the trick.”
