Flying Dog Brewery Operation Breakfast

What the brewers say

"All the roasted malt flavor you expect ... plus the huge coffee and vanilla flavor of a cafe latte."

What our panel thought

"Sweet vanilla nose rounds out coffee, red-berry esters, and dark-chocolate. In the flavor, roast-malt sharpness tempers mild sweetness, light caramel plays with vanilla and fig-cherry esters. Solidly presented, rich coffee stout. Very mochaccino."

What our editors thought

"Caramel macchiato nose with hefty maple syrup—big, bold, sweet. The sip is more restrained: roast-coffee sharpness slashes through lighter body. More malt support in the middle would put it over the top."

Madhouse Brewing Barrel Aged Carpe Diem 2019

Coffee, chocolate, and bourbon flood the front end of each sip with quiet waves of maple and vanilla round-ing out the finish. This thing is thick and overtly sweet. The bourbon stays up front, and no other barrel charac-ter makes an appearance.

Amalgam Underground Breakfast

This is at least 500 yards of velvet goodness. Coffee, maple, and vanilla blend very nicely in the aroma. Taste is the same, very smooth, velvety, and big. This one is hard to put down. As it warms, it gets even better. The barrel aspect comes out in the finish—some char to help balance the sweetness. Mouthfeel has a very silky texture. This is a beer we would gladly enjoy in a coffee mug while camping or hanging out by a fire late at night. Not overtly sweet, this can be a full glass of fun.

Powder Keg SUPERVOID: Breakfast

Aroma: “Coffee, chocolate, roast, vanilla, maple. The base beer actually sticks through the coffee and maple indicating some semblance of balance.” Flavor: “Rich coffee and chocolate sweetness with a light coffee spiciness in the middle of the sip that quickly transitions into a tobacco, leathery character right before the finish. Moderate alcohol warming. Aftertaste is a smoky, chocolate campfire with a moderate sweetness.” Overall: “Highly complex. Excellent beer—the rich dark-roasted character from the stout and coffee balance perfectly with a lingering sweetness with complex flavors of caramel, chocolate, licorice, and dark fruit. I love this beer. All it needs is some sliced strawberries and a dollop of whipped cream.”
