Weihenstephaner Original Premium Lager

What the brewers say

“Crisp taste with mild hoppy notes. Brewed according to our centuries-old brewing tradition.”

What our panel thought

“Light floral hops, perfume-like, complemented by light dough and cracker malt; some green apple. Flavor profile with an unusual caramel-like note along with the bready, crackery malt and floral hops. Crisp body, drinkable finish, with some underlying doughy malt.”

What our editors thought

“Extremely light Noble-floral nose. Even the bitterness in the sip is vaguely floral. The body is weightless and crisp, with a perfectly light balance of malt and hops.”

Bayerische Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephan Weihenstephaner Original

**Aroma:** Light sulfur aroma followed by bready pils malt. Very low hop aroma, perhaps a whiff of floral hops. Noble hops balanced by pils malt, cut with a light apple cider note. Clean lager profile. **Flavor:** Crisp and assertive bitterness followed by smooth, slightly sweet malt. Fine, lively carbonation dances on the tongue. Light pils malt followed by a brisk flash of spicy hop flavors, then a light bitterness. **Overall:** Well-balanced and classic, this is a fine Helles. Somewhat hop balanced, such a delicate beer should be enjoyed as fresh as possible. Light bodied and refreshing, a great beer for nearly any occasion. Well-brewed and executed with just the right amount of malt focus to make it appropriate for the style.

Weihenstephaner Pilsner

“Super sexy-looking in the glass. Opens with an herbal, almost ganja-like hop character, followed by sweet bready malt and pleasant sulfur notes. Lager-sulfur and bready malt meld with hops in the flavor. Bitterness is a bit low, but easy drinking. Just an absolutely crushable pilsner that any craft-beer novice would have zero problem approaching.”

Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier

**Aroma:** “Starts with a spicy aroma that fades as it warms, and gives way to a velvety banana aroma and overripe pineapple fruit esters. Mild nose, but the tart, bready weizenmalz comes through clearly. Whole wheat flour, and a light, sulfury yeast. Soapy hops and a touch of clove spiciness, black pepper, and cherry.” **Flavor:** “Hops bitterness up front, with light wheat sweetness in the background. Once the bitterness subsides, there’s a hint of vegetal flavor in the middle. Light lemony tartness, wonderful clove, and a kiss of cardamom. Great acid, banana, and wheat—like banana bread beer.” **Overall:** “It’s stronger to the clove side on the ester. The banana ester is the strong point, and worked well with the touch of vanilla. Great showcase for wheat malt flavors.”
