3 Fonteinen Oude Geuze Cuvee Armand & Gaston

What the brewers say

“3 Fonteinen Oude Geuze Cuvée Armand & Gaston is a blend of 1-, 2-, and 3-year-old traditional lambics, all brewed at Brouwerij 3 Fonteinen. Spontaneous fermentation, patient maturation in oak barrels, and continued evolution in the bottle result in a distinctively complex beer.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Funky and wild with some woody Brettanomyces that leads into light lactic sourness and some tropical pineapple fruit notes. With a touch of pepper and smoke character, this is interesting and intriguing.”

Flavor: “Incredible depth of funk, with slight peppercorn character, light briny caper notes. Back-end acidity, with a nice citrus and peach component cleans up and rounds out the broad funk. Finish is soft, not overly dry and puckering, with a very pleasant lingering lemony sourness and a hint of white pepper.”

Overall: “Understated complexity without the rough edges you often get from wilder fermentations. A recognizable ‘beer’ character that often gets lost in this style. Refreshing, complex, well-crafted, exquisite.”

3 Fonteinen Oude Geuze

**Aroma:** “Strong notes of fresh peaches and apricots balance with lighter notes of pineapple, strawberry, coconut, and lemon. Earthy *Brett* with barnyard and lemon-zest notes provides complexity. Clean citrus lactic provides a nice tart acidity up front.” **Flavor:** “Sharp citric sourness up front joined immediately by coconut, pineapple, and mango. Aftertaste is a smooth bitter/sour blend. The coconut twist is a nice surprise. Bold flavor hits up front with fruity sweetness, apricot and peach. High carbonation helps the fruit come to life and provides warmth. The *Brett* wood character and funk is very present but not overpowering.” **Overall:** “Great fruit character, and I really enjoyed the carbonation of this beer. One of the fruitiest non-fruited beers I have ever tried, which speaks to the amazing execution of the blend. Near-perfect balance of tartness, acidity, and fruit. Incredible, might be the best gueuze I have ever enjoyed.”

3 Fonteinen Oude Kriek

**Aroma:** “Nice tart and sweet cherry character. Some earthy spicy notes that add complexity. Moderate cherry notes. Slight tart note as it warms up. Strong sour cherry aroma.” **Flavor:** “The balance of the sweetness to the tartness in this beer is really nice. It is not too bold but the nice sharp lactic notes bring boldness to this beer. The carbonation is really nice and helps lift the beer as well. The sweet cherries help to finish the beer and keep it juicy and sweet. Very nice sour cherry character. Not too much barnyard, but still sour complexity.” **Overall:** “Very enjoyable and a nice balance of the tartness to the sweetness. The showcase of both the cherry and the lactic tartness was very nice. As it warms and the carbonation starts to dissipate, more of the cherry note comes out. Light goat and horse blanket.”

Brouwerij Lindemans Oude Kriek Cuvée Renée

__Aroma:__ “Clean cherry, with hints of raspberry and lemon tartness. Wet hay and earthy *Brett* funk, cork, wood, and floral notes. Light medicinal aroma, like fluoride. A flowery perfume emerges as it warms, similar to carnations.” __Flavor:__ “Dark, full, rich cherries, with a mix of sweet and tart that’s wine-like. Complex woody background, with deep, dark forest earth and cork, with some Belgian-like wet hay. Lemony acidity, intense lactic, and a big carbonic bite. Very assertive mix of flavors. Good carbonation, and a tart finish that lingers.” __Overall:__ “The cherries were showcased with such a pure cherry flavor. The cherry aroma and flavor with the hay, cork, and earthy funk really work. But the acidity is so intense and almost makes it difficult to drink this otherwise fantastic beer. The balance is excellent, and the medium-dry finish, with the lingering fruit and funk, is out of this world.”
