Brouwerij Lindemans Oude Kriek Cuvée Renée

What the brewers say

“In order to produce Oude Kriek Cuvée René, the cherries ferment in a lambic that is at least six months old in huge 2,640 gallon oak barrels called foeders. After six months, this traditional kriek is bottled in corked 75 cl bottles. The beer will then undergo a spontaneous second fermentation process.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Clean cherry, with hints of raspberry and lemon tartness. Wet hay and earthy Brett funk, cork, wood, and floral notes. Light medicinal aroma, like fluoride. A flowery perfume emerges as it warms, similar to carnations.”

Flavor: “Dark, full, rich cherries, with a mix of sweet and tart that’s wine-like. Complex woody background, with deep, dark forest earth and cork, with some Belgian-like wet hay. Lemony acidity, intense lactic, and a big carbonic bite. Very assertive mix of flavors. Good carbonation, and a tart finish that lingers.”

Overall: “The cherries were showcased with such a pure cherry flavor. The cherry aroma and flavor with the hay, cork, and earthy funk really work. But the acidity is so intense and almost makes it difficult to drink this otherwise fantastic beer. The balance is excellent, and the medium-dry finish, with the lingering fruit and funk, is out of this world.”

Lindemans Brewery Lindemans Oude Gueuze Cuvée René

“Super _Brett_-forward aroma with elements of leather, horse blanket, earthy lemon, wet-concrete followed by subtle grassy notes. The sip is funky but bright, with lemon, leather, earthy pepper, on lively effervescence. Finishes nicely tart and slightly citric.”

Lindemans Brewery Lindemans Cuvée René Oude Gueuze

“Green tobacco-like notes in the nose with hints of tar, wet hay, light fruit. Rustic and earthy with hints of smoke, leather, dried fruit, and a rich umami mushroom finish. Soft tartness lingers on the tongue as pineapple but blends well.”

**Aroma:** “Blackberry and quite a bit of higher alcohols. Brett notes add goaty and barnyard aromas with some spicy phenolics. High sour notes up front with a touch of malt sweetness. Sour dimin- ishes after the first impression leaving just a touch of sour with a medium amount of cherry notes.” **Flavor:** “Flavors of tart green apple and lemon. Some barnyard and a touch of acetic. Strong yet smooth lactic flavor lends a moderate-high sourness up front with an almost sour-candy-like note that fades quickly into a dry finish. Little to no malt character, medium body, and a crisp acidic finish. No alcohol bite but a slight tart, acidic bite as it warmed up.” **Overall:** “Very enjoyable with a crisp carbonic bite, smooth lactic sourness, and medium cherry notes. Flavor is a bit too dominantly sour without enough malt to balance. The sourness creates a slight puckering effect in the back of my mouth.”
