Night Shift Brewing Pfaffenheck

What the brewers say

“Bright, traditional Pilsner. Floor-malted German grain delivers soft notes of honey and biscuit balanced by a floral, zesty hops profile.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Sweet biscuit and bready malt play a supporting role. Moderate fruity floral and tropical hops aromas with a slight sweet spice, almost marmalade-like.”

Flavor: “More malt character than most Pilsners, with a prominent biscuit note and a touch of bread crust. Hops bitterness is pronounced and lingers, which mutes any hops flavors, but some pine and cattiness come through. Finish is slightly sweet and malty for the style, but there’s also a grainy bite to balance.”

Overall: “Clean and easy-drinking, fairly well-balanced beer. Enough sweet malt aspects and floral/spicy hops characteristics to satisfy either end of the palate perspective.”

Sierra Nevada Brewing Company Pale Ale

**Aroma:** “Light grapefruit, lemon, and floral notes with a slight grainy sweetness behind hops aroma. A little restrained for style, but still pleasant. Light sweet malt notes with a touch of biscuit malt. Mostly clean with low esters and just a hint of sulfur.” **Flavor:** “Nice up-front hops, balanced wonderfully with a soft malt character. Citrus rind dominates hops flavors with some floral notes. A slight juiciness may be related to the slight caramel note from the malt. Restrained yeast notes provide a subtle fruitiness that works well. Light and carbonic—very drinkable. Definitely hops forward but not out of balance, with a slight lingering bitterness.” **Overall:** “This is your dad’s pale ale—a pretty classic-style pale ale that’s rounded out with no intense sharp edges that hits straight down the middle. All ingredients play well together, but nothing really sticks out. A clean, quaffable pale ale with just a touch of sweetness in mid-palate and a bit mild on the hops for a modern APA.”

Summit Brewing Keller Pils

Aroma: “Moderate Pils malt sweetness with a touch of sulfur. Very subtle floral and herbal hops with a touch of noble spice, a touch of malt breadiness. More Pils malt on retronasal. Light sulfur as it warms. Overall, somewhat muted.” Flavor: “Clean Pils malt throughout. Falls slightly sweet on the palate, but the finish is crisp and carries enough bitterness to cut through. Floral and spicy hops notes play well with the malt and bring a nice complexity. Finishes fairly dry with a slight grain-husk tannic bitterness.” Overall: “Nice beer, although a touch sweet for some. Easy drinking. A more aggressively hopped Pilsner that isn’t shy about what it’s trying to do with highlighting the spicy and floral hops.”

Tree House Hurricane

Aroma: Huge fruit notes that all over the place, white grape, green banana, pineapple, strawberry. Flavor: The fruit salad of the aroma carries to the nose with a more prominent under ripen banana dominating initially, with a pineapple and grapefruit emerging in the mid palate. A slight pithy, drying character from the bitterness gives the impression of eating on a banana rind. Overall: You came to haze town for fruity and juice hop character and this beer delivered.
