Port City Brewing Co. Oktoberfest

What the brewers say

“Served in the ‘Keller’ or ‘Zwickel’ style—unfiltered and naturally carbonated.”

What our panel thought

“Nice blend of herbal Noble hops and bready malt, verging on toasty. The malty flavor is on the sweet side, with suggestions of caramel and toffee. Nicely rounded flavor and fairly lively mouthfeel. Sweetness continues into the finish. Pretty elegant märzen-like lager—balanced and fairly delicate.”

What our editors thought

“Mid-toast nose with dry and crisp fall leaves. On the sip, it trends sweet with a faint coffee note adding a touch of bitterness. Easy to drink.”

Sierra Nevada Brewing Co Oktoberfest

“Soft floral Noble-hop aroma. Subtle bread and biscuit malt notes. Very light metallic twinge to the water profile, but it finishes clean and dry with a light lingering bitterness. More festbier than märzen.”

Hoppin' Frog Brewing Pentuple

“Malt-forward toffee and sweet bread aroma. Deep dried apricot and stone fruit, low floral alcohol. Sweet malt flavor—toffee, burnt sugar, and treacle with light sweet tobacco. Smooth and warming.”

Breakside Brewery Breakside Pilsner

Floral hop aroma with citrus hints and an evident but complementary minerality. On the palate, crackery malt character cuts through perfumey hop-bitterness. Light body, any unnecessary heft has been carved out. Extremely clean. Beautifully crafted.
