What the brewers say

A thick and decadent brew just like a coffee milkshake. Contains brown sugar and cream extract.

What our panel thought

Rich roasted coffee dominates the aroma with hints of bitter chocolate and sweet cream in the background. The flavor is equal parts roasted coffee, sweet milk, and turbinado sugar, creating the impression of a sweet-ened cold brew with cream. It finishes pleasantly sweet while avoiding a cloying note.

What our editors thought

Sweet but curiously sophisticated rich coffee note on the nose offers an alluring entry to the very sweet body. Under normal circumstances, that level of sweetness would be unsuitable, but here it carefully plays against the coffee, fruit, and roast notes, creating a surprising and unexpected beer.

Two Roads Brewing Espressway Coffee Stout

Fantastic, intense coffee presence—subtle, almost fruity, without vegetal or ashy character. Somewhat thin; layers of coffee and more coffee balancing an understated stout—pleasant, dry, bitter. Finishes smooth. More sweetness would help round things out.

Half Acre Beer Company Big Hugs

**Aroma:** “A complex blend of chocolate, rich malt, and a hint of roast. Coffee is very subtle. Toasty graham cracker. Vanilla coffee with cinnamon. Some roasted malt.” **Flavor:** “Sweet mocha stout with subdued hops bitterness. The medium coffee flavor substitutes for hops bitterness. Moderate to strong sweetness that slowly fades. Chocolate and rich malt with a bit of toast and a hint of roast. Somewhat warming from alcohol.” **Overall:** “Coffee with lots of cream, several cubes of sugar, and chocolate flakes sprinkled over the top. A great dessert beer.”

Southern Tier Brewing Company 2x Stout

**Aroma:** “Pronounced sweetness up front with a touch of roasted malt character. A subtle earthy hops aroma comes through a bit. No fruity esters in the nose. Creamy, roasty, sweet, and dry. Chocolate and hints of coffee.” **Flavor:** “The lactose adds some extra creaminess to the malt sweetness. Lots of coffee in the finish, almost latte-like. A hint of hops spiciness keeps it interesting without overwhelming the lactose. Caramel with a subtle roasted malt character, mostly reminiscent of chocolate. Sweetness is well balanced with enough bitterness from both hops and roast to avoid it becoming cloying.” **Overall:** “A tasty, sweet milk stout that seems to favor hops a bit more than roasted malt character for balancing sweetness. Very tasty and drinkable. This beer manages to keep the focus on the lactose while maintaining a nice complexity.”
