What the brewers say

“Malt-forward dark brown ale with roasted butternut squash and garam masala.”

What our panel thought

“Coffee, cream, pumpkin spice greet the senses. Chocolate malt and roast come out to intermingle delightfully with the spices. Clove, nutmeg, vanilla, a whisper of cinnamon also make an appearance as it warms.”

What our editors thought

“Dark red, almost brown, and clear. Rich pumpkin-pie nose, caramelized. Clove notes are pretty assertive as it warms. Moderately sweet beer on the palate, finding an equal balancing bitterness. Lively, with a lingering bitterness. A nice beer that’s really heavy on the clove.”

Liquid Mechanics Brewing Company Stuck in Reverse

“Aroma of white bread and toasted crusts evolves into brown-bread maltiness in the flavor. Stays a bit one-note. Perfect level of bitterness balances the malt, rounding out the overall impression. Light, highly quaffable, agreeably smooth. Barely toasted cool liquid.”

Hi-Wire Brewing - South Slope Specialty Brewery Bed of Nails

“A tarry licorice aroma with a citrus swirled in. Decadent dark-chocolate cake batter in the flavor, balanced by an equal helping of citrus hops. Desserty molasses with orange peel expressed over the top.”

Seventh Son Brewing Co Stone Fort

Nose of rich toast, caramel, and touch earth and red berry. The flavor gets more distinctly malty, with rich caramel, toasted bread, light smoke; spicy bitterness is nicely balance. Finish is crisp but with just enough sweetness.
