SKA Brewing Oktoberfest

What the brewers say

“Amber-brown color imparted by nutty, bready, toasty Munich and Vienna malts.”

What our panel thought

“The sugar-cookie nose is almost perfumed, with hints of pilsner malt. The hops get involved with orange zest and floral impressions. Pleasantly sweet malt, like a fresh scone. Moderate hop flavor mingles with the caramel sweetness but leaves a slightly resinous tail of bitterness.”

What our editors thought

“A pointed caramelized-sugar, floral, and burnt-crust nose offers a hearty swagger. The sip follows through with big but dry well-toasted bread, an earthy hop through line, and a heavily toasted light bitter malt finish.”

Prost Brewing Company Marzen

“Toasty and bready, the aroma is elegant and clean. Pleasant, brightly sweet malt note sings out front, like an amped-up helles, sweet pastry, or the purest honey. Reddish-gold color—lovely—with ample foam. Each sip has the same disciplined simplicity of bruschetta, herbal hop flavor, and crisp clean finish.”

Paulaner Oktoberfest Märzen

“Moist dark-bread nose with some brown-sugar accents. Fresh and malty in one of those obvious but enjoyable ‘they’re brewing today’ ways. Sweet, grainy flavor on medium body, with minimal bitterness. Leans sweet, more like artisanal spent-grain bread than malt beverage.”

Karbach Brewing Oktoberfest

“The luxurious head grants a freshly toasted bread aroma. A sip builds on that impression, adding a light splash of caramel before subsiding into a drier cracker finish with a breath of hops. A bit of alcohol warmth presents the only false note.”
