What the brewers say

“German specialty malts create waves of deep sweet malt character of dark fruits and candy sugar. A big, rich beer for the fest season.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Moderate toasted malt up front with bread crust, light caramel, coffee, and toffee mingled with light floral, herbal, and grassy hops. Alcohol is evident but not hot. Borders on creamy, like a sweet cream caramel.”

Flavor: “Roasted malt with a focus on dark chocolate, coffee, and caramel. Floral hops are slightly more pronounced than one would expect. A slight huskiness that approaches tannic or astringent. Finishes quite dry and slightly bitter with bits of caramel lingering into the aftertaste. It lacks the refinement of some others in the style, but that extra personality is endearing at times.”

Overall: “Nice German dark kilned-malt complexity, full-body mouthfeel, and a slightly astringent finish driven by a bit of excessive drying from the alcohol heat.”
