Saint Arnold Brewing Company Summer Pils

What the brewers say

“Crisp and refreshing, this beer is perfect for a hot summer day. It has a delicate, sweet malt taste complemented by an abundant hops aroma and flavor. Brewed with fine German malt and a copious quantity of noble hops imported from the Czech Republic.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “The floral hops character hits in the front, and malt bread-like sweetness sits in the back of nose. The Pilsner sulfur character dominates, and it’s almost minerally in that respect. Flowery hops character is medium-low, woody, and spicy, and blends in throughout.”

Flavor: “Light-bodied but balanced well and slightly creamy. The hops are not overly bitter but provide some nice spice to break up the malt biscuit sweetness. Very clean and dry finish.”

Overall: “Refreshing Pilsner with a nice balance that’s very enjoyable and drinkable. With the crisp hops flavors and light citrus tartness in the background, it makes me want to take another sip.”

Saint Arnold Brewing Company 5 O’Clock Pils

**Aroma:** “Low fruity esters of citrus and peach, with some floral and spicy hops notes as it opens up. Some background sulfur and mineral notes, with slight biscuit and a malt sweetness that sits in the back.” **Flavor:** “The malt sweetness surprises on the taste and carries through to the finish. Biscuit and honey-like sweetness up front with some peach esters throughout and complementary orange and lemon. The hops provide a nice complexity of spice and earthy character, and the carbonation finishes clean and dry.” **Overall:** “A curious beer with some unique flavors. Leans more malty, but still light and refreshing. The aroma is less hoppy than expected, with the mineral notes. Despite the generous head, the carbonation level seems a touch less lively than desired. The lingering hops bitterness is refreshing, makes me want another sip.”

Trumer Brauerei Berkeley Trumer Pils

**Aroma:** “The malty aroma leaves a clean, sweet bready biscuit initial impression. Slightly flowery and citrusy hops character, with some woody and spicy notes. Low sulfur with some mineral notes.” **Flavor:** “Malty, biscuit sweetness is smooth, light-bodied, solid, and slightly sweet. The lemony, floral, spicy hops accent the clean malt bill nicely, and the high carbonation makes everything pop just a little. Finishes with just enough bitterness to make you want another sip—or gulp.” **Overall:** “A wonderfully light and refreshing beer that leans slightly more toward a Helles in its focus, but overall, it is still well-crafted. It’s on the low end of a hoppy lager, but the high end of a traditional Pilsner. Enjoyable, crisp, and clean, and blended well throughout.”

21st Amendment Brewery El Sully

**Aroma:** “Strong, sweet Pilsner malt aroma with delicate biscuit and slight toast and a touch of honey. Lemon citrus notes in the back, with a light kiss of floral hops. Subtle, with some sulfur, which is acceptable.” **Flavor:** “Light Pilsner malt with a medium-sweet biscuit presence, but is not overly sweet. The floral, earthy hops flavors blend right in, with a low-key pleasant bitterness. Bright body with a slight apple note toward the end of the sip and a refreshing carbonic bite.” **Overall:** “Enjoyable, light, and refreshing, with a nice smoothness and crisp finish. The medium Pilsner and honey sweetness with the light hops came together effectively.”
