The Big Friendly Tapestry From An Asteroid (2023)

What the brewers say

"Barrel Fermented Brett Saison conditioned with Brett."

What our panel thought

"Begins with combination of white grapes and citrus zest, pineapple & orange. Aroma is vinous and white winelike, kind of a rich chardonnay with tons of barrel presence. Acidity has a lime character which cuts through that oaky richness; supported well by meringue fluff notes, which add levity. The wine character is the most interesting part of the sip, which opens with sweet pastry dough and then quickly dives into sauvignon blanc and white grape seeds. The swallow has a burpy funk to it that seems partially barrel-related but isn't entirely welcome. Surprisingly rich malt flavors, earthy hops, more citrus. Sweet at the finish. Acidity really seems to stand in for carbonation in terms of cleaning up the sip."

What our editors thought

"Medium hay with a rustic malt note, candied lemon and lime citrus notes, and just a touch of acetic acid in the aroma. Lighter in the body than expected, with subtle woody Brettanomyces notes, very light grassy grain, and in the finish a slightly abrupt herbal bitterness."

The Big Friendly Joe's Raspberry Preserves

“Sweet, plump, jammy raspberry notes are assertive, almost veering into ripe tomato. Flavor is quite sweet and jammy; a light tartness isn’t enough to balance it. Finishes slightly dry.”

The Big Friendly Oblique & Bent

“Funky aroma of barnyard, horse sweat, and straw with a little freshly emptied wine barrel. Beautiful taste profile of white-grape juice, chalky calcium, mussed straw bale. Just enough bitterness.”

The Big Friendly Sweep It Into Space (2023)

Pale hazy pour with no head. Bright ester / citrus notes on the nose with a touch of hay. Spicy white pepper aromas, lavender, and white peach. A hint of cracker bread and melon. Orange and grapefruit juice flavor profile with layers of lactic acid atop a soft blanket of light dough. Abrupt finish that feels flat. Lower in depth and complexity.
