Finback BA The Hawk & Whale

What the brewers say

Imperial coffee stout with kopi luwak coffee, aged 15 months in bourbon barrels and then finished with fresh kopi luwak coffee. Brewed in collaboration with Horus Aged Ales.

What our panel thought

Aromas of vanilla, caramel, coffee, chocolate, almond, roast malt, and bourbon-like oak notes up front. The flavor profile is much of the same with a bit more assertive oak character than the aroma with notes of vanil-la, caramel, and toasted marshmallow. The barrel qualities pair well with the base beer, and there’s a beauti-ful finish of chocolate, smoke, spice, and lingering, chewy sweetness. Noticeably alcoholic without being over-ly harsh. Fantastic complexity throughout. Definitely something to savor.

What our editors thought

Rich peanut and strong coffee on the nose lay atop assertive bourbon-barrel notes. The sip is as rich as it gets—inky, nutty, with sharp definition and enveloping umami and deep chocolate notes.
