What the brewers say

“Imperial stout aged 1 year in Woodford Reserve double-oaked barrels.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Dark chocolate dominates. Very, very dark chocolate and roast with chile pepper. There’s also a lot of spicy bourbon but not in a harsh or overpowering way.”

Flavor: “Super-intense flavor across the board. Dark rich chocolate and dark cherry. Boozy. Over the top sweet, but the bitterness and the booze attempt to balance it. Still sweet but also bitter.”

Overall: “There’s an intense roasted-malt richness throughout, to the point it becomes spicy, all backed with a warming boozy barrel character. The complexity of the malt as it warms is fantastic, definitely something to savor slowly.”

Anchorage Brewing Blessed

Slightly muted aroma—light coffee, ash, crème brûlée, coconut, vanilla. No obvious barrel. Sweet flavor, like semisweet chocolate torched with brown sugar crust. Notes of cherry, raspberry, bourbon, vanilla, caramel, molasses, coconut. Rich, thick, warming.

Anchorage A Deal with the Devil Double Oaked

Aroma: “Vanilla, toffee, caramel, semisweet chocolate, leather, and tobacco. Spicy phenols. Candied orange peel and fig, burnt maple syrup, and maybe just a bit of wine grape.” Flavor: “Caramel, toffee, vanilla, maple, bittersweet chocolate. Sweet, but balanced. Boozy and warming, but not harsh. Fairly viscous for the style, full-bodied. Pleasant oak notes of bourbon, sherry, port. Finishes sweet, but not cloying.” Overall: “A wonderfully complex, full-bodied, sweet, big, and delicious barleywine. Well-balanced and beautifully boozy. An exquisite beer that begs to be savored.”

Burial Beer Seasoned Skillet

Aroma: “Intense coffee and roasted malt mixed with vanilla, booze, and a smoky character. Inviting caramel whiffs, with plenty of ethanol.” Flavor: “Semisweet bitter chocolate is the dominant character. An ashy roast note from the nose is still present and leaves a lingering tongue-smacking chalky feel. The finish is rich and not overly sweet, and the bourbon and wood character add a nice underlying warmth.” Overall: “A boozy iced chocolate mocha, even if a little thin. Well-balanced and not harsh or over the top. A good breakfast beer, if you’re so inclined.”
