Ballast Point Brewing Company Wahoo

What the brewers say

Our Wahoo White is brewed with unfiltered, unmalted wheat and oats that give it a distinctive cloudy complexity. True to the Belgian tradition, this Witbier boasts a refreshing, citrusy flavor thanks to the orange peel and coriander we add to the boil.

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Very interesting, unexpected spice aroma. Sweet background wheat with lemon, almost like lemon candy. Very faint and earthy hop notes. Nice floral coriander.”

Flavor: “Peppery phenolic notes. Some yeast character and coriander with a carbonic bite and some bitterness. Strong wheat graininess, but finishes crisp and clean. Balance is exceptional: fruity tartness is the prominent feature. Good blend of spice and earthy notes with creaminess from wheat malt.”

Overall: “An interesting take on the style. Crisp and refreshing. Excellent beer that accents both the wheat and lemon character well. Refreshing wit with nice balance of sweet and spice. This would pair really well with certain types of food, especially Cantonese.”

Shiner / Spoetzl Brewery White Wing

**Aroma:** “Strong, perfumey coriander with deep, earthy notes, backed up by a light, sweet wheat aroma.” **Flavor:** “Big coriander notes! Crisp and refreshing with a good carbonic bite. Clear but creamy mouthfeel (almost like Cream of Wheat) with a nice grainy sweetness in the background. Well balanced with some tartness and a crisp, slightly cidery finish.” **Overall:** “Good example of the style except for an odd earthy aroma. But very clean and refreshing. Spices are well balanced with the malt. Refreshing and herbal character is showcased. An easy drinking wit, but if you don’t like coriander, you won’t like this beer!”

Badger State Brewing Waloon Witbier

“The brilliant clarity and attractive effervescence make this one good-looking beer, but it came across a bit simple and one-dimensional in both aroma and flavor with a fairly straightforward wheat-malt character balanced by some simple floral hops.”

Ballast Point Longfin Lager

Aroma: “A nice spring day on Marienplatz in Munich. Starts with a whiff of sulfur aroma and moves into light bready Pilsner malt and restrained spicy German hops (herbaceous, floral), and light white grape–juice notes.” Flavor: “Grainy but still crisp and fairly dry. Emphasis on hops is slightly pronounced. Slightly bitter. Nice bread and light Pilsner malt flavor. Medium-light mouthfeel.” Overall: “The nose is perfect. Nice malty flavor. A little dry and bitter for the style but very drinkable. Quite enjoyable and broadly in the helles style.”
