What the brewers say

“This lager is our homage to one of Utah’s favorite traditions—raging houseboat parties on Lake Powell. Crisp and refreshing, it’s perfect for hot days, warm summer nights—and groggy mornings.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: Delicate nose, with a subtle balance of doughy malt and spicy hops. The hops brings a bit of green peppercorn, with moderate lemon and floral character. Malt is medium bread and light toast, with some sweetness.”

Flavor: “Some slight floral notes. Light-bodied, sweet bready malt with some biscuit. The clean freshness of the pepper and lemon is well supported by the malt and invites the palate to take a second and third taste.”

Overall: “Crisp and clean, with a moderate citrus flavor that plays well with the high carbonation. Light body, with a semi-spicy profile, that balances well with the floral hops. Refreshing, inviting, and crisp. Very drinkable.”

Red Brick Brewing Company Laughing Skull Craft Lager

**Aroma:** “Light bready sweetness that mixes with some slight floral notes and hints of pepper and lemon. A bit of acetaldehyde.” **Flavor:** “Light-bodied, crisp, with some bready sweetness and a slight citrus character. Very little hops flavor, with some pepper and bitterness up front, and a hint of floral that fades almost before you swallow it. Nice creaminess.” **Overall:** “Clean freshness with pepper and lemon, supported by a balanced biscuit malt. Invites the palate to take a second and third taste, and very welcoming. Lawnmower beer, and perfect for a hot day.”

Tröegs Brewing Company Sunshine Pils

**Aroma:** “Strong cotton candy and bubblegum, very sweet, with a strong floral—almost soap-like—note on the nose. Some sweet biscuit malt character and slight orange creamsicle and lemon citrus notes. Low earthy, sulfur hops notes.” **Flavor:** “Very sweet up front, but fades to super bitter and is champagne-like on the finish. The same bubblegum and cotton candy tones linger throughout, but are lost in the bitterness at times. Malt almost balances the spicy bitterness of the hops and is slightly sweet.” **Overall:** “A decent Pilsner offering, although the malt and hops are somewhat unbalanced. It’s a solid, refreshing German-style Pilsner.”

Goose Island Beer Co. Four Star Pils

**Aroma:** “Super clean, somewhat flowery notes, combined with an herbal, slightly vegetal, hops aroma. Sweet malt, like a mash, and very low sulfur. Smells like the wort at the end of the boil.” **Flavor:** “Well-balanced malt and hops character, with the sweet toasted cracker malt sweetness complementing the herbal and flowery tones of the hops. Clean finish and great balance.” **Overall:** “Pretty solid, even with the flowery, earthy notes that are a little assertive. A good malt body that makes it unique and interesting. Very enjoyable!”
