Fremont Brewing Interurban IPA

“Interurban offers the adventurous beer lover a warm embrace of roasted pale malt swirled with a hand-selected blend of flavor malts and filled with the rich spice of Chinook, Centennial, and Amarillo hops.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Some sweet malt and pepper spice-like character. Mild grassy and earthy note of hay and citrus. Muted hops note up front with medium perfume note. As it warmed and opened up that went away, and a big hops grapefruit with slight dank notes came out.”

Flavor: “Biscuit malt sweetness hits up front and then carries to an earthy spice hops character with some grapefruit and slight citrus notes. Flavor is not what the aroma suggests. Grass is still there, plus some mangoes. Caramel malt body is lovely, but the long bitter finish leaves a lingering harshness on the back of the tongue. Wine-like notes up front with moderate perfume notes.”

Overall: “The more I drank this beer the more I enjoyed it. It is slightly rough around the edges with the malt and hops but it’s a good American IPA that will neither offend nor impress. It would score higher if the bitterness were smoother.”

Hop Butcher For the World How Giant is Giant?

“Notes of orange, lemon, and a touch of passion fruit mix with pine and a hint of caramel malt in the aroma. Vibrant citrus notes pop off the palate. The citrus-and-pine flavor battle plays out atop a sufficiently sweet malt body, allowing their bitterness to shine. Alcoholic heat isn’t harsh.”

Omission Bright Eyed IPA

“Light Earl Grey tea and wort aroma. The hop aroma is a bit muted, but the flavor delivers the hops and has a medium level of supporting bitterness. Clean and refreshing with medium-high carbonation and a semidry finish.”

**Aroma:** “Grapefruit character dominates with little malt aroma. Some tropical flavors and an almost soap-like floral character. Pleasant citrus notes, some light spice, some subtle malt as it warms.” **Flavor:** “Complex and assertive hop flavor up front with notes of grapefruit, tropical fruit, and pine. Decidedly bitter in flavor and finish, but still drinkable. Malt has a slight bread crust character. Good balance with bitterness.” **Overall:** “The fruit notes dance around the beer to the finish. Very nice example of an American IPA—middle of the road, but very drinkable. The hop profile is complex yet focused, and the balance is decidedly bitter to showcase the hops. Just enough sweetness to round everything out and keep it drinkable.”
