Celis Brewing Company Celis White

What the brewers say

“Brewed with the highest quality ingredients, Celis White is a light and hazy yellow wheat beer, ideal for sipping during the hot summer months. An easy-drinking session beer laced with flavors of orange peel, spice, and coriander.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Strong floral character, with orange, tangerine, and vanilla. The orange-peel and perfumy character is somewhat muted. A bit of honey, bread, and wheaty graininess, along with lemon, esters of cherry, pear, and apple, and spicy phenols. All the aromas one would expect in a well-crafted wit, in almost perfect balance.”

Flavor: “The sip has the same floral presence, with brightness from the citrus esters, and cherry, pear, ripe apple, and strawberry enter, along with some coriander, black pepper, and ginger. The citrus is more lemon than orange. Tart wheat supports, with the graininess helping the beer to finish very dry.”

Overall: “All the parts of this beer come together well. The floral character dominates but is supported by the esters and the malt. Like a classic rock band on tour, it plays all the fan favorites, but it doesn’t throw out anything new.”

pFriem Family Brewers Hazy IPA

A mélange of aromas that tick the boxes of tropical fruit, citrus, green onion, and pine. Some likely malt-derived sweetness balances the bitterness of the hops-forward flavors that have notes of green pepper, on-ion, grapefruit pith, orange peel, and light pine. The softness of the mouthfeel also tempers the bitterness, rounding out the overall profile, enhancing the drinkability, and softening the finish.

**Aroma:** “Very light wheat with notes of coriander and a little bit of hop spice blended with slight sweetness and subtle hop notes. Mainly coriander and pepper notes.” **Flavor:** “Moderate sweetness with a strong bittering finish. Significantly more hop bitterness than would be expected for the style. Complex for a wit, with slight sweetness and herbal earthy notes. Sweet citrus in the finish. Big body despite carbonation and crispness. Almost a viscous mouthfeel.” **Overall:** “Wheat and spice character are well done, but the hop utilization or timing adds a bitterness that’s atypical for the style. A refreshing and different take on a wit. More spiced than usual but still finishes with sweet citrus. Good, crisp, refreshing beer.”

Harpoon Brewery UFO White

**Aroma:** “A blend of fruity, herbal, floral, and vanilla. Enjoyable notes of melon and cantaloupe, with ripe orange, tangerine, grapefruit, and a touch of lemon. A hint of nuttiness, with a whiff of cocoa, and a honey floral character.” **Flavor:** “The orange dominates on the flavor, along with some raw, grainy wheat, which supports an estery blend of orange, lemon, and vanillin. A great blend of citrus and coriander with the spice ascendant—it’s piney, flowery, and woody. The carbonation is a bit low, and the body drops off very quickly. It’s dry and somewhat thin. Light honeysuckle emerges as it warms.” **Overall:** “The orange character is likeable—could use a bit more of the creamy body to go with it. The aroma delivered more than the flavor, with all the herbal and perfumy spice, the melon, nuttiness, and the hit of cocoa. Still, it is very drinkable.”
