Industrial Arts Torque Wrench

What the brewers say

“We doubled up the hops and juiciness from our favorite NEIPA, Wrench, and well, here we are.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “A barrage of lemon citrus, herbal, resin, pine. We can smell the hops burn coming.”

Flavor: Lots of piney dankness that could use a bit more malt to balance it out. Light mango, a little orange-juice character, too. The bitterness lingers long. A throwback to the bitter wars of IPA.”

Overall: “Overall, this is a pretty solid DIPA, but it sure does not hide the booze and also has a touch of hops burn that gets stronger the more you drink.”

Stone Fear Movie Lions

Aroma: American hop varieties with notes of pine and resin. Malt is moderate and gives a sweetness to the aroma that gives it a ripe dirty gym underwear note. Flavor: Malt sweetness paired with a citrus orange hop. Onion and pine resin come through, it's just not a good combination with under attenuated malt. Overall: Off flavors, tropical fruits, alcohols, overall unpleasant.

Stone Brewing Company Ruination IPA

**Aroma:** “Grapefruit/lemon zest. Interesting floral herbal notes (light vanilla, jasmine, spruce), some slight cheese, earthy. Strong malt sweetness—caramel, toffee.” **Flavor:** “Some spice, citrus, tangerine, orange, caramel, bread crust. Bitterness increases as it warms into earthy, spicy, grapefruit. Caramel candy in the flavor—cracker jacks? Low mint in the background with a musty yeasty earth character that gave it some dimension.” **Overall:** Complex hop aroma carry-through. Nice sweetness in body helps to balance the citrus and earthy dank hops. Gains in complexity as it warms. Not cookie cutter—more points for originality with this one.

Ballast Point Brewing & Spirits Big Eye IPA

**Aroma:** “Moderate earthy hops, touch of floral, light sweetness, very light toasty, touch of caramel. Pine, citrus, and a little bit of fruit. A very fun aroma that is constantly evolving.” **Flavor:** “Moderate toasty, light sweetness, earthy hops, moderate pine, touch of floral, aftertaste. Malt depth is nice, with some fun caramel notes playing alongside the hops. Similar to the aroma, but the resinous pine character is more prominent, hiding some of the more fruity characters. That sharp pine character heightens the bitterness, though it doesn’t linger too long, due to the more complex malt character displayed.” **Overall:** “Fun earthy/floral hops IPA with a fair bit of malt backbone. I could almost call this an English IPA. An evergreen-heavy IPA that bows (ha!) in deference to the Northwest, whether it’s brewed there or not. Bitterness is firm but appropriate here. The malt depth is also nice. A unique and fun beer that is a nice departure from the more fruity IPAs in vogue. A perfect example of how malt complexity can heighten and balance hops character.”
