European Brewery Convention (Ebc) is the autonomous scientific and technological arm of the Brewers of Europe, a not-for-profit organization that represents the European brewing sector. Based in Brussels, its mission is to benefit the European brewing sector by facilitating collaboration and the sharing of knowledge between beer producers, maltsters, and academic organizations.
The EBC was founded in 1947 in an effort to bring the brewing industry in post-war Europe closer together by giving them a forum through which to share brewing science and technology. As victors and vanquished re-built their brewing industries after World War II, cooperation between them was crucial and the EBC became a critical conduit for information. The EBC has provided critical scientific research to breweries, governments, and policy makers throughout the course of the establishment of European agricultural standards, environmental policies, and food safety rules over several decades.
While the EBC’s main objective is to benefit European brewers, the organization is best known for the EBC congresses, which are held every 2 years. The congresses are among the foremost gatherings in the world focused entirely on brewing science and technology.
In the late 1990s, the EBC started to discuss a merger with the Confédération des Brasseurs du Marché Commun or CBMC. Founded in 1958 and closely allied with the European Community (and later the European Union), the CBMB officially changed its name to the Brewers of Europe in 2001. After a decade of debate, the EBC and the Brewers of Europe merged in late 2007, giving the European brewing industry a unified voice.
Ordinary membership in EBC is open to national organizations in Europe that represent the majority of the brewing industry in their respective countries. Nineteen European countries are members of EBC.
The board of the Brewers of Europe oversees an executive committee made up of representatives from national member organizations and from major brewing companies. The executive committee plans and executes the organization’s activities, while the day-to-day running of the organization is carried out by an executive officer.
