What the brewers say

A pale ale featuring our selected lots of 2020 Strata.

What our panel thought

Pine-forest hops in the nose, with bread-crust-malt highlights. In the flavor, medium-firm pine-herbal bitterness, more focused on the hops, with some citrus bitterness. That bitterness offers a slow, smooth build that persists into the thoughtful finish. Dry and approachable.

What our editors thought

Peach and apricot nose with a touch of herbal spice—a decidedly modern approach. Light and breezy sip, with a present but tightly controlled bitterness playing against gentle pale-malt sweetness. Not a retro pale ale, but firmly aimed at the future.

pFriem Family Brewers Extra Pale

“Dank and terpene-soaked, the hop character is buoyed by clean malt and a mild floral ester. The first impression is that the beer needs to be more bitter, but the slow build of the bitter finish convinces you soon enough.”

King Harbor Brewing Co Crew Provisions

“Every pale ale should be a celebration of hops; this beer clearly wants to wave that flag. Pine, grapefruit. and tangerine form a warm mélange, and a perfect touch of malt-and-ester punch carries the hops without taking the foreground.”

Prison City Brewing 4 Piece with Strata

Thick, velvety blanket of foam. In the aroma, pink Starburst with a vegetal note. Grassy flavor with lemon custard and honey malt; nicely balanced sweetness with light background bitterness. Slick, tongue-coating mouthfeel. A bit unwieldy, raw, but with high points.
