Cinderlands Beer Co. Douse: Rye

What the brewers say

“Blend of imperial stouts aged in rye casks.”

What our panel thought

“Devil’s food chocolate cake on the nose, with rye spiciness. Some cherry and liqueur-filled chocolate flavors with more rye spiciness and barrel tannins. A little on the bitter side. A bit hot and unbalanced.”

What our editors thought

“Layered nose with chocolate, a bit of amaro-like herbs, a faint sweet smokiness, and a bit of coffee-like roast. Grippy in the flavor as the initial sweet burst immediately resolves with a light tannic drying, highlighting smooth bitter malt below.”

Cinderlands Beer Co. Douse: Bourbon Vanilla

“Rich aroma features barrel character front and center with vanilla, coconut, oak, and cherry. Flavor bomb of richness: brown bread, deep rich chocolate, espresso. Lovely complexity of vanilla, buttery oak, and sweet cherry without being too bourbon-forward. Finishes sweet but not cloying.”

Humble Sea Brewing Co Ryething Tides

“Fudgy chocolate on the nose. Dark chocolate molten lava cake with a flambé of rye whiskey. Some dark red fruits and hints of red wine. Enough rye-barrel character to add tannins and dark malts for bitterness. Complex, rich.”

Pondaseta Brewing Co. Rye Barrel Aged Castle Black

“Cab-like aromas of huckleberry, black pepper, bread crust, and a hint of roasted malt. Pleasant alcohol in flavor juxtaposed with vanilla, caramel, and chocolate flavors, with mild roast supporting. A tad thick, but plenty drinkable in small pours.”
