Stone Brewing Company IPA

What the brewers say

This golden beauty explodes with citrusy flavor and hop aromas, all perfectly balanced by a subtle malt character.

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Citrus and piney hop notes dominate with little-to-no malt aroma. Dank, citrus rind, tea, orange marmalade-like with light peppery spice and slight cattiness. As it warms, some graham cracker-like maltiness. Malt is subtle but shows up in the background as toasty.”

Flavor: “Complex hop flavor without any singular flavors dominating—citrus rind, some floral, and citrus juice character, subtle pine. Balanced well with light sweet malt character. Citrus up front with juicy grapefruit and some pine, earthy hop flavors add complexity. Bitterness prominent and lingers only long enough to beg for more.”

Overall: “Very enjoyable with good balance of piney notes and citrus/grapefruit. The hops are definitely in the front of the beer. Very nice IPA that has great, complex hop profile that is rounded perfectly with a nice, lingering bitterness. Very tasty.”

Sierra Nevada Brewing Company Torpedo Extra IPA

**Aroma:** “Dank, resiny, earthy hop aroma with a subtle malt sweetness. Hints of citrus increase the complexity.” **Flavor:** “Hop flavor is piney and resiny more than citrus, but showcases both with hints of grapefruit and pineapple. Very nice lingering bitterness that carries hop flavors through finish. Finishes dry with slight sweet malt back.” **Overall:** “More balanced than most IPAs, with a malt sweetness that rounds out the resiny, piney, earthy hop profile. Somewhat different but a little muted. Well-balanced and executed IPA.”

Founders Brewing Company Centennial IPA

**Aroma:** “Hops aroma is unique with citrus, resin, and pine along with subtle floral notes. Floral, perfume-like notes present. Slight sweetness from the malt.” **Flavor:** “Nice, complex hops flavor with resiny, piney notes and some grapefruit rind and citrus. Great bitterness. Clean and dry finish with little-to-no malt profile.” **Overall:** “Very drinkable hops-balanced IPA with dominant floral notes. Hops complexity and diversity are nice, and bitterness is well-executed to accentuate hops. Lacks a bit of uniqueness and is a bit safe, but overall it’s very tasty.”

Stone Brewing Company Ruination IPA

**Aroma:** “Grapefruit/lemon zest. Interesting floral herbal notes (light vanilla, jasmine, spruce), some slight cheese, earthy. Strong malt sweetness—caramel, toffee.” **Flavor:** “Some spice, citrus, tangerine, orange, caramel, bread crust. Bitterness increases as it warms into earthy, spicy, grapefruit. Caramel candy in the flavor—cracker jacks? Low mint in the background with a musty yeasty earth character that gave it some dimension.” **Overall:** Complex hop aroma carry-through. Nice sweetness in body helps to balance the citrus and earthy dank hops. Gains in complexity as it warms. Not cookie cutter—more points for originality with this one.
